DOUGLAS HALL 1993

DOUGLAS COLTS:

Victory in the final of the Coca Cola Youths League Cup was the highlight of the season for the minors of Douglas Hall, a season in which they emerged as one of the two leading youths sides in Cork. They gave Rockmount a great fight in Division One, a fight that went down to the last match which the northsiders won 3 - 2 to take the championship.

It was the fifth meeting between the sides. They started with a scoreless league tie. Then The Hall scored a shock 3 - 1 win in the Evening Echo Munster Youths Cup (only to be surprised themselves by Killarney Athletic).

Rockmount levelled the series with a 1 - 0 Murphy Cup win but Douglas had the edge in the League Cup semi-final which they won on spotters.

The talented Douglas lads were managed by Kieran Grainger. It was his first season with the club but Grainger has had considerable management experience with UCC. He led the students to success in the AUL Second Division in 1987 and then there were the successful Collingwood cup campaigns of 90 and 91.

Grainger picked from the following: David Boyle, John Carroll, Ian Murnaghan, John Mehigan, Stephen O'Connell, John Kenneally, John Glackin (vice-captain), Kieran Desmond, Alan Carroll, David Grainger (captain), Ian Doyle, Donough Keeshan, Mark O'Connell, Ronan Corkery, and Peter Lyons.

Most of the squad had been together for a number of years though without

success. But a couple of new signings and Grainger's influence changed all that. The scoring talents of Doyle, hat trick hero in the Coca Cola final triumph, and skipper Grainger, were other major factors.
