AFTON VILLA 1993

Afton Villa this year celebrates its 10th anniversary in AUL Football.

Originally, a Shipping League Team, going by the name of Arthur

Ring's, Afton Villa was founded by six players in August of 1983.

The club's first pitch was located at Knockavilla, Crossbarry.

Nowadays, Afton Villa play in Killeady, their third year at this

ground.

Like all new teams, Villa started in the third division and, despite

their best efforts, stayed there for the first four years. Since

then, there has been some success and they are now pressing hard for

promotion from the Second Division.

There is a squad of twenty three and a committee of six whose

dedication and committment is an essential ingredient of the club's

existence.

In the past year, Afton Villa have substantially upgraded facilities

at Killeady with the addition of new dressing rooms and showers,

giving visiting teams some of the best facilities on offer in the

second division.

Two establishments have been long term associates and supporters of

the club and secretary John O'Sullivan extends his thanks to Barrett's

Bar in Killeady and to the Beer Garden in Turner's Cross. Joe

Mulligan is treasurer at Villa and the other committee members are Bob

Cotter, Kevin Nolan, David Soden, and Dan O'Shea.

The main ambition now is to reach the first division and the dedicated

committee are confident that it will be achieved over the next few

years. Perhaps this anniversary season?
