CELTIC UTD DEC 01

CELTIC UNITED

Celtic United, title contenders in AUL 2A, are the successors to Castle Celtic and Killavullen and the two year old club has no less than three pitches available to it, two in Castletownroche, one in Killavullen.

The combination, managed by Neilly Owens and his assistant Paul Hayes, have eighteen players available for selection. Skipper is centre-half Oliver Ryan and the leading marksmen to date are Michael Whelan and Sean Connolly. Keeper Mick O'Sullivan is the current player of the year while Niall Hanrahan won last season's highest scorer award.

Celtic finished second to Glen Celtic in 3A last season and have since been reinforced by the arrival of Seanie Browne, Mick Browne, Sean Connolly, David Owens, Mick Whelan and Tom Foley. Assistant manager Hayes reckons their best victory to date was the 1 - 0 away win at Castleview in a top of the table clash.

They have also reached the quarter-finals of the Saxone Cup, the knockout competition for second division sides, and are due to play Dripsey Celtic over the holidays. Hayes reckons that holders Dripsey will give them a tough game "but we hope to win".

He was pleased enough with their last outing before the Christmas break: " We drew 0-0 away to Newmarket Town in a very close game which earned us another point in our challenge to stay in contention at the top of the league".

Hayes says the aim is to consolidate in 2A with a high placed finish and also to have a good cup run, if not in the Saxone, then in the County Cup which should begin in February. Hayes says that the side's preparation is good: "We train on Tuesday and Thursday nights, Tuesdays under floodlights in Castletownroche and Thursdays on the Astroturf in Buttevant".

The committee members are Mick Twohig, Alan Hunter, Brid Cronin, Donal Mellerick, Jimmy Power and Neilly Owens and they get much needed support from Shanahan Car Sales, Castle Arms Bar, Dinny Murphy's and Swift Cabs (both in Mallow).
