ST JOHN BOSCO'S UTD:
These Saints may be second string but they sure aren't playing second fiddle.
The Saints in question are St Bosco's Std who going well in AUL 2B and caused
a big upset with a recent win away to higher ranked Cobh Town in the AOH.
The East Cork club has many links with the coveted AOH. Bosco's, the first
team that is, won it in 1980 and in 1990 and are rarely absent from the
closing stages. Aidan Berry, currently starring in the "B" side was on the
victorious 1990 crew.
The way the second string is performing at present, don't be surprised to see
the two Bosco's outfits in the closing stages in the spring. Indeed, they have
already played one another in the AOH. That was in 1992 when the senior side
won 2 - 0.
Frank Morgan is the manager of Bosco's Utd. Frank has been in AUL football in
one capacity or another for the past twenty one years and is currently the
club chairman.
He started his football back in 1973 with St Martins of Youghal, one of the
clubs that amalgamated some years ago to form the current Youghal Utd club.
Frank started off as a centre half but took over the goalkeeping duties in
1976 and was a regular between the posts until a family move to Midleton in
1982 led to his signing with Bosco's. Here too he played in goal and went on
to win a County Cup medal in 1986/87.
While the versatile Berry is probably the best known of Morgan's men, the
inspiration for the younger players (and they are quite a young side) is
veteran defender Gerry O'Sullivan, sometimes the immovable object, sometimes
the irristible force. Either way, you don't want to see the lion hearted
Gerry in your path.
The squad, which is skippered by Tommy Wallis, is: Noel Murphy, Rory
McSweeney, Jason Bailey, Joe Ryan, Gerry O'Sullivan, Brendan Forde, Aidan
Berry, Ivan O'Riordan, Michael Corcoran, Sean Corcoran, top striker Justin
Donnelly, Mark Duggan, John Power, John Cotter, and Greg Cahill.
This team had its origins in the club's youth side which was brought together
by secretary Denis McSweeney in 1989. In their second season, they reached
the final of the Youths Second Division Cup only to be pipped on penalties by
Coachford.
They then entered the third division junior league and soon gained promotion.
Last season wasn't a great one but Morgan has put a much greater emphasis on
training this term. The team's attitude has improved and so have the results.
Morgan's men are well and truly on their way.
