BLARNEY STREET ATHLETIC APR 2000

BLARNEY STREET ATHLETIC

April has been a bad month for first division outfit Blarney Street Athletic. Footballers though have the happy knock of looking ahead and the Northside club are no exception. They are already planning an upgrade of their pitch for next season.

Blarney Street play out in Monard on what dedicated secretary William Thomson describes as "one of the best pitches around". They share with Harp Utd and both clubs do their bit in maintaining the excellent surface.

The clubs are also co-operating in repairing and improving the dressing rooms that were damaged at the start of the season. The Street are lucky in that they have great support from the likes of the Anglers Sports Lounge and Coughlan Natural Gas Heating.

They have seen their league chances dim in recent weeks and last Saturday were pipped 2 - 1 by Castleview in the quarter-final of the City Challenge Cup. They also reached the last eight of the St Michael's Cup and were in the running for the league for most of the season. Their biggest win was an 8 - 1 victory over Dillon's Cross in a cup game but they also showed true quality with wins over leading first division sides Temple Utd and Maymount Celtic.

Much of the credit here goes to the new management team of John McCarthy and Brian Healy and to the hard working committee, which consists of Vincent Thompson, John McCarthy, Anthony Peelo (treasurer), and William Paul Thompson (secretary). Regular training at the all weather complex in Churchfield also helped.

The panel consists of Jimmy Hannigan (captain), Bobby Kelly (current Player of the Year), Roy McCarthy, Ger Cronin, Mark Bennett, Vincent Thompson, Don Sheehan, James McCarthy, Kenneth Coughlan, Edmond McCarthy, and new signings Liam Myers, Paul Hurley, Anthony Lynch, Stefan Corkery, Aidan Murphy, Alex O'Regan, and Tony Brereton.
