DRIPSEY CELTIC FEB 02

Dripsey Celtic

Dripsey Celtic, winners of last season's Saxone Cup, were intent on winning AUL 2 this season. But new manager Timmy O'Sullivan and his assistant Harry O'Brien have had a change of priority forced on them. A poor start to the league meant they were soon out of the contention and then the retention of the Saxone became the main aim.

But it could all have been so different had Dripsey managed to hold onto a two goal lead against leaders Ardmanning Celtic. Those two early goals were lost in "a crazy 12 minute spell, a total loss of concentration that allowed Ardmanning run in four goals" according to club spokesman Stephen Fogarty. Dripsey now concede that Ardmanning are "money on" to take the AUL 2 title. Dripsey will continue to battle for the second spot but that seems to lie between UCC and Douglas Hall.

Dripsey though can put some pressure on their promotion rivals by beating Harp Utd on Sunday (kick off 10.45 ) in Monard. Harp, battling against the drop, frustrated Dripsey in their first meeting and the tie ended all square. O'Sullivan and O'Brien will be looking for all three points on this occasion.

The Dripsey squad is: Raymond Moynihan, Pat O'Riordan, Ross Underhill, Martyn Underhill, John Duggan, Billy Murphy, Gary Murphy, Brian Linehan, Brian Healy, Tomas Ryan, Tadhg Manley, Cathal Dineen, John Keohane, Mark O'Sullivan, Dave Hogan, Rona Maher, Ger O'Shea, Noel O'Sullivan (captain), John Hogan, Damien Barry, Eugene "Spatch" O'Sullivan, Davy Buckley and Pat Ring.

Bob McCullough is the Dripsey president and the officers are Martyn Underhill (chairman), Ger O'Shea (secretary) and Thomas Ryan (treasurer). Other committee members are: Ronan Maher, Helen Feeney, Stephen Fogarty and Noel O'Sullivan. The club receives regular support from The Fountain, The Weigh Inn, Joe Cotter Haulage and O'Crualaoi Butchers.

Saxone CUP

Billy Murphy's early winner gave Dripsey Celtic a 1-0 win over West End in last season's Saxone Cup final; it was Celtic's first ever piece of silverware. They are through to this season's final, against league rivals Ardmanning Celtic (winners of last season's President's Cup) and it should be a cracker.

Though champions, Dripsey entered their first round game against 2B title contenders Passage as underdogs. Eugene O'Sullivan put Dripsey, almost unbeatable at home, ahead in the first half. Visitors Passage equalised after the break before Dripsey sub Ronan Maher scored with his first touch to send them on to round two.

Dripsey were in for another tough one, away to 2A contenders Churchview Celtic and stand-in keeper Pat O'Riordan did well as Churchview went on all out attack after a scoreless first half. The city side did take the lead in the 70th minute but never say die Dripsey equalised though Gary Murphy in the 89th. Extra time started sweetly for Dripsey when a cross by skipper Noel O'Sullivan came back off the bar and was slotted home by Dave "Mongo" Hogan for the winner.

Celtic Utd are also in the running in 2A and they were Dripsey's next opponents. Dripsey were at home on this occasion and there were quite a few there to cheer them on. Late in the first half, Dripsey struck twice. Both goals came from Eugene "Spatch" O'Sullivan; Noel O'Sullivan set up the first, Davy Buckley the second. United piled on the pressure after the break but Dripsey keeper Raymond Moynihan was in defiant form.

Dripsey were drawn away to Knocknaheeny in the semi-final and knew it would be difficult. But they needn't have worried as two goals in the opening six minutes sent them on their way to a 3-1 victory and back to the Cross for the second time in two years.

In the 5th minute, Tadhg Manley's pin-point pass sent the lively Pat O'Riordan in for the opener. Sixty seconds later, Gary Murphy chased a long clearance by keeper Raymond Moynihan and headed the hopping ball over the Knocknaheeny keeper.

Knocknaheeny gradually got back into it and only a great 32nd minute save by Moynihan prevented a home goal. Three minutes later, Dripsey sub Billy Murphy handled in the box and the home side converted the penalty.

But Dripsey soon restored their two goal advantage. In the 40th minute, Murphy's clearance broke to brother Gary who set up Eugene O'Sullivan who made no mistake.

DRIPSEY CELTIC FEB 01

Dripsey Celtic

Dripsey Celtic will be back at Turner's Cross and back in the Murphy's Stout Saxone Cup final on Sunday week. And hard-working PRO Stephen Fogarty will be hoping for better luck than they enjoyed against Glanworth in the 1997 decider. Then, despite enjoying majority possession, the Dripsey lads lost 2 - 0.

Dripsey Celtic were formed in 1992 and joined the AUL for the 92/93 season. The first season saw Dripsey finish sixth in the league. Stephen recalls that their best victory that season was against local and forever rivals Strand Utd. That first derby meeting was Dripsey's debut competitive outing and they emerged as winners on a 3 - 2 division. Dripsey got promoted to AUL 2 the following season.

In 1999, Celtic started an U18 team and this squad, with some remarkable victories, made all the headlines for the club that season. They also reached the semi-final of the League Cup, going out on penalties to Grattan Utd, who went on to win the competition.

This season looks promising and the club is hopeful of success, not just in the Saxone but also in the league. Six of the youths are playing with the junior team who have lost just two games so far this season.

New signing Eugene "Spach" O'Sullivan and youths player Gary Murphy have notched up some 20 goals between them. The following youths players are also making the starting eleven of the junior team: Mark "Kanu" O'Sullivan, Noel O'Sullivan, John Carey, Pat O'Riordan and Stephen O'Leary. Fogarty is hugely encouraged by the fact that Dripsey Celtic now have a formidable squad of players and not just the bare eleven.

Under the management of John Manley, who played with Lakewood Ath for 16 years where he won a half dozen honours, Fogarty is hopeful that Dripsey Celtic's "professionalism might finally bring them honours after nine years of trying". Thomas Ryan, who was last season's Player of the Year, is captain and his leadership is showing with great victories over Ballyclough and a double over Strand Utd. Things are looking up!

The current youths team also have a chance of winning honours under the management of Fogarty, better know as "Fogi", and they are joint top with local rivals Coachford in AUL Youths One. They also reached the quarter-final of the League Cup but lost on spotters to higher ranked Leeds.

Their best victory to date was against Coachford in the League Cup. Dripsey came from 3-1 down to go on to win 6-3. Fogarty reckons this is the proof "that Dripsey youths team means business again this season". And, with youths captain Gary Murphy scoring on a regular basis he is hopeful that "maybe both of Dripsey's teams will bring home silverware in 2001".

They say that behind every good manager, there is a good coach; both managers in the Dripsey Celtic camp are fortunate to have a excellent trainer in Martyn Underhill.

The junior panel is: Ray Moynihan, Pat O'Riordan, Ger O'Shea, Tadgh Manley, Billy Murphy, John "Locha" O'Donovan, Brian Linehan, Thomas Ryan, Noel O'Sullivan, Mark O'Sullivan, Gary Murphy, John Carey, Davy Buckley, John Hogan, Pat Ring, Stephen O'Leary, Eugene "Spach" O'Sullivan, Ronan Maher, Colm O'Riordan, Ross Underhill, Dave Hogan.

The youths squad consists of Ger O'Sullivan, Noel O'Sullivan, Mark O'Sullivan, Stephen O'Leary, Martin O'Leary, Brian Healy, David O'Mahony, Liam Buckley, Eugene Hogan, Richard Carey, John Carey, Gary Murphy, Aidan Buckley, Diarmuid O'Riordan. Last Season's Youths Player of the Year was shared between Dave Buckley and Liam Buckley.

Fogarty says that Dripsey Celtic's biggest problem is their pitch, which they are leasing from Inniscarra Community Centre in Ballyanly: "The pitch cannot be played on during the winter months, a yearly occurrence. This season seems to be no different with the junior team only playing three games at home and the youths just one. Local clubs have been very generous to Dripsey in the use of the pitches. But our main aim should be to acquire a pitch of the own, which would be playable all year round."

"Thankfully, Dripsey's training arrangements are not affected by the their pitch situation because Dripsey Community Association give the soccer lads full use of the Community Park and the club is extremely grateful for this kind gesture. Thanks also to Coachford who have helped us out in recent weeks particularly by giving us their facilities for the Saxone semi-final win over Doneraile. We also get great support from Kevin Feeney's Weigh Inn for the juniors and Mick Herlihy gives tremendous backing to the youths."

Asked about the club's short and long term aims, he replied: "Aims for the season are definitely to win the Saxone Cup and to have a good cut off Division 2 and the youths are aiming for Silverware as well. The club's long-term ambition is have their own pitch because the future, with a growing population in Dripsey and lot of promising youths players coming up the ranks, is indeed looking very bright for this yet young club. I'd be happy with silverware and a pitch in the next few years".

Dripsey's steady advancement as a club has been made possible by a hard working committee which currently consists of: Bob McCullagh, President; Denis O'Callaghan, Chairman; Martyn Underhill, Secretary; Helen Feeney, Treasurer; Stephen Fogarty, P.R.O; Ronan Maher, Thomas Ryan, Colm O'Riordan, John Hogan, Terry O'Shea, and Tadgh Manley.

DRIPSEY CELTIC JAN 2001

Dripsey Celtic A.F.C. was formed back in 1992 for the 92/93 season. The first season Dripsey finished 6th in the league and their best victory that season was against local and to be on going rivals Strand Utd. In their first meeting and also Dripsey's first competitive match Dripsey came out winners 3 -2

Dripsey got promoted to Division 2 the following season, but it was in 1997 that Dripsey Celtic reached their first final and it was against Glanworth in the Saxone Cup at Turners Cross. Unfortunately, even though Dripsey held most of the ball possession in the final they lost 2 - 0

In 1999 Dripsey Celtic started a U18 team and this team made all the headlines in the Club in '99, with some remarkable victories. They also reached the semi final of the League Cup going out in penalties to Grattan Utd. who went on to win the competition.

This season 2000/01 looks to be one with a hope of success with 6 youths playing in the Junior Team.
