BALLINCOLLIG'S NEW MAN:
Mick McNulty is the new manager of the Ballincollig intermediate side, his
appointment announced at the club's recent annual general meeting. McNulty, a
former goalkeeper with the club and between the sticks for Healy's Bar in this
season's MFA Inter-Pub competition, was in charge of the junior side that
reached this year's Cork area final of the FAI Junior Cup.
Former youth international keeper Finbarr Hogan is stepping down a grade and
will be the player-manager of the first junior side. The second junior team
will again be managed by Martin O'Neill. Youths manager Denis Campion was
also reappointed.
The meeting decided to look into the possibility of fielding a third junior
side as there is a big demand for football in the growing town. Miah Murphy
was entrusted with this task and he will be the manager of any side formed.
"We did not win any trophies," said chairman Paddy Byrne at the agm "but it
was a successful season, even by our own high standards". And who would
disagree. Ballincollig's intermediate team, the two junior team, and the
youths side, all contested finals at Turner's Cross.
But the Cross was not a happy hunting ground in 92/93. Three times the
intermediates lost there, in the Linnane semi-final, the Shield final, and the
League play-off, Temple Utd their conquerors on each occasion.
Ballincollig juniors were pipped by Buttevant in the FAI area final.
Ballincollig Athletic lost the Michael's decider on spotters to Rockmount
while the youths went down to Mallow Celtic in the final of the Second
Division Cup. But Ballincollig have had some good times at Turner's and
they'll come round again.
Byrne was also pleased that all teams, including schoolboys, finished well up
in their leagues and went on to congratulate the managers and
assistants - "people who put themselves out, timewise and financially,
to help throughout the season". He also had a big thank you for the
sponsors and supporters.
The club was also pleased with Byrne, secretary Mick McNulty, and treasurer
Pat Kavanagh, and all were unanimously re-elected en bloc. Also elected were
Martin O'Neill (vice-chairman), Jim O'Shea (assistant secretary), and Christy
White (assistant treasurer).
Ballincollig also held their awards function recently and the Person of the
Year Award went to Denis Campion, the general manager of the club's schoolboy
section. Campion is also the manager of the youths side. Player of the
Year trophies went to Lennie Walker (Intermediate), Martina Horgan (Ladies),
Anthony McNulty (first juniors), Terry Kelly (Ballincollig Athletic), and
Noel O'Mahony (Youths).

PRESIDENT JOHN HOGAN
The Ballincollig club recently elected long time supporter John
Hogan as their new president. The popular Hogan, a native of
Waterford, will serve a three year term.
John and his wife Nancy (whom he married over forty three years
back) are fanatical supporters of the club and can be seen (and
heard) at two or three games each weekend.
Eleven of their twelve sons played with Ballincollig. The
exception was Pat but he made his contribution as PRO. Paul,
when he retired as a player, enjoyed a successful spell as first
team manager.
Finbarr, currently player-manager with the senior team, is
following in Paul's footsteps as is Brendan, now in charge of the
third team who play in AUL 1.
Keeper Finbarr and his twin brother Anthony (also a member of the
senior team) played with the AUL at youths and junior level.
Finbarr gained further representative honours when selected for
the Republic's Under 17s and for the Munster youths.
Another brother, Colm, emigrated to the USA last season but,
before leaving, captained the juniors to success in AUL 1B while John managed Coachford.
Nancy and John have to do a little travelling these days to keep
up with the relations. Three sons, Noel, Declan, and Ger, play
with nearby Leemount while grandsons Brian and Philip are showing
great promise with Rockmount's juniors.
The former League of Ireland defender John Coughlan is
Ballincollig's senior vice-president and his experience and
straight talking are highly valued by the officers of this
vibrant club. Vincie Drumm and Mick Healy are the other current
vice-presidents.

BALLINCOLLIG DECEMBER 1994
finbarr hogan 8/12/94
FINBARR HOGAN:
Ballincollig player-manager Finbarr Hogan has rubbed shoulders
with some of the best known sportsmen in the country e.g. Eamonn
Dunphy, Johnny Giles, Dave Barry, Ger Cunningham, Jim Beglin.
Back in the spring of 1980, Barry (Gaelic Football) and
Cunningham (Hurling) received Munster Youth Stars Awards in the
Imperial Hotel. Both Barry and Cunningham had trials with soccer
clubs across channel but that opportunity never came the way of
Hogan, the Ballincollig keeper who won the Soccer award that
evening.
Nineteen eighty was a great year for Finbarr who had started his
soccer career with Ballincollig some eight years earlier under
the late Mick McNulty (senior). That period was barren enough.
Hogan had just one medal to his credit, a runners up token
following an Under 16 Cup final loss to Tramore.
In March of 1980, Hogan was selected to travel to France with the
Irish Under 17 team to take part in a major tournament in Cannes.
Jim Beglin, then with Waterford Bohs, later an senior
international and now a TV and radio commentator, was also
included in the panel. Mr Giles was manager and Mr Dunphy was
his assistant. Hogan was capped in the tournament in which
Ireland played against France, USA, Romania, Italy, Mexico, and
Tunisia.
Dave Barry was a member of the Cork AUL youths team that season,
a team managed by Denis Galvin, last week's Hall of Fame winner.
Barry missed the final against Kilkenny but current team mate
Liam Murphy didn't. Terry Kearns, another of that team to go on
and play League of Ireland, scored both goals as the AUL, with
Hogan in goal, beat their guests by 2 - 1. Donie Butler,
current FAI Commercial manager, managed Kilkenny that June day.
In November 1980, Hogan received a youth cap when he played with
the Republic against Northern Ireland in Belfast. In 1982, he
travelled with the Republic's juniors to a game in Scotland and
six months later to a game against the Birmingham FA. In
September 1983, he was again on the Irish panel (for a home game
against Scotland).
In the mid eighties, he joined Crofton Celtic and helped them to
success in the FAI Intermediate Cup in 1986. Back with
Ballincollig, he won St Michael's Cup, Munster Junior Cup,
Corinthians Cup, and Intermediate League medals.
In recent seasons, he has turned to management, starting off with
underage sides (Under 15 and 17). Last year, with assistance
from Eamonn Kennedy, he led the juniors to the championship in
League 1. This term he has taken charge of the club's first team
who currently top the Murphy's Stout AUL Senior Division.

BALLINCOLLIG 1996
BALLINCOLLIG'S 21st:
Ballincollig's formation in 1974 came that bit too late for entry to the AUL
Shield but they made up for the late start with an unbeaten rush to the top of
the third division section and, then in a memorable game at Turner's Cross,
beat Lee Rangers in the title play-off.
The Mid Cork side were quickly into the habit of winning trophies, a knack
they haven't lost. And are unlikely to lose anytime soon. Just last season,
their youths team pulled off a great treble.
They were mainly a young side in 75 but they did have one old dog to show them
the tricks of the road and that was none other than John Coughlan, the ex
League of Ireland star and manager of the AUL Oscar Traynor Cup winning team
in 1966.
Other members of the team in that championship play-off against Lee Rangers
were: Michael McNulty, Sean Fitton, Brian Gaffney, Pat Healy, Alan Collins,
Ricky Galvin, Jerry Sheehan, Martin Hogan, Norman Collins, Pat Young, and Jack
O'Keeffe.
The first officers at Ballincollig were chairman, Michael McNulty (senior);
Vice chairman, Timmy Cotter; Treasurer, Frank O'Riordan. Their counterparts
today are Paddy Byrne, Martin O'Neill, and Pat Kavanagh.
There was just one team that first year but now they field no less than nine
schollboy sides, one youths, one ladies, one over 35s, three junior, and one
intermediate.
The others involved in running this massive undertaking are: John Hogan
(President), John Coughlan, Vincent Drum, and Michael Healy (all vice
Presidents), Gerardene McNamara (secretary), Anthony McCarthy (Assistant
secretary), Denis McCarthy (assistant treasurer), Ber Daly (PRO), Denis
Campion (Youths manager and General manager Schoolboys), Finbarr Hogan (1st
team manager), Martin O'Neill (2nd team manager), Danny Garrett (3rd team
manager), Anthony McCarthy (4th team manager), and Tom O'Connell (Ladies
Manager).
Perhaps the highlight of the 21 years was the success in the Cork Examiner
Munster Junior Cup in 1989 when Terry Coomey notched the winner against
homesters Killarney Celtic, the first Kerry side to reach the provincial
decider.
Ballincollig had to fight all the way before they could rest assured of
victory against the Kingdom's dark horses in an action packed final at Fossa.
Ballincollig were highly motivated: in the Munster final of three years
earlier at Turner's Cross they were pipped by Clonmel Town who scored the
winner with seconds left in extra time.
Honours List:
Third division: 1974/75.
Second division: 1975/76; 1981/82; 1991/92.
First Division: 1993/94, an unusual double, Ballincollig champs in AUL 1,
Ballincollig Athletic in AUL 1B.
Intermediate League: 1990/91.
Mid-West Cork Cup: 1987/88; 1989/90;
County Cup: 1975/76; 1976/77; 1979/80.
St Michael's Cup: 1981/82; 1985/86; 1988/89.
AOH: 1985/86.
Munster Junior: 1988/89.
FAI area winners: 1978/79; 1984/84.
Corinthians Cup: 1989/90; 1990/91; 1991/92.
The youths, before last season's haul in Murphy Cup, 2nd Division Cup, and AUL
2, won the Coca Cola Cup in 1981.
There are many stories behind the statistics and if you want to find out more
you could do worse then fork out three quid for the 21st anniversary souvenir
publication Ballincollig AFC, 21 Years of Football History. The picture
packed book, great value, is available locally and from club members. It was
edited by Gordon Murphy with help from Martin O'Neill, Michael Collins, Denis
McCarthy, Gerardine McNamara, and Ber Daly. Well done to all concerned.

BALLINCOLLIG 1995
BALLINCOLLIG YOUTHS
Winners: Murphy Youth Cup, AUL Division Two, Second Division
Cup.
It has been a great year for the Ballincollig youths team and for
their management duo Denis Campion and Mick Finn. After a slow
start to the season, the second division high fliers came up with
a fantastic treble: Murphy Youth Cup, AUL Division Two, Second
Division Cup.
Manager Campion, also the general manager of the club's thriving
underage section, was delighted with the contribution from his
assistant Finn. It is Mick's first year with the club though he
has helped out for several years with the local street leagues.
One of the best decisions they made during the season was moving
Pat Healy from midfield to striker. The speedy youngster bagged
no less than 34 goals and Denis is now looking forward to seeing
Healy and company make their mark in the club's junior and
intermediate teams.
Campion and Finn made many a hard decision during the season but,
according to Denis, the hardest one of all was deciding on the
Player of the Year: "All the team performed excellently all
season but at the end of the day, Mark Buckley pipped the rest
and we gave him the award."
The talented squad included: Mick Lordan (keeper), Jason "Benny"
O'Leary, Ken Daly, Graham O'Connell, Mark Buckley, Denis Cronin,
Adrian Searls (captain), Pat Healy, Dave Johnson, Dessie O'Leary,
David Bradley, Rory Murphy, Evan Dorney, Mark Hilliard, Peter
O'Gorman, Terry Yelverton, John Hickey, and John Walsh. Searls,
Bradley, and Buckley, were all on the AUL youth panel.

BALLINCOLLIG 1993 (AUG?)
Byrne was also pleased that all teams, including schoolboys, finished well up
in their leagues and went on to congratulate the managers and assistants -
"people who put themselve out, timewise and financially, to help throughout
the season". He also had a big thank you for the sponsors and supporters.

BALLINCOLLIG JAN 2000
Ballincollig
Three cheers for the committee of Ballincollig AFC, in particular for the unstinting voluntary work of the sixteen person committee. Secretary Gerardene McNamara is typical: "We, as a club, feel it is important that we do our share in keeping boys and girls off the street and participating in sport".
And they do. Nineteen teams, coinsisting of (approximately) 60 girls, 180 boys, and 100 adults, wear the Ballincollig colours. In addition, a soccer clinic is run each Saturday morning for six to ten year olds.
The vibrant club is fast making a name for itself as a supplier of top class talent. Liam Miller was on the U16 European championship team and is now with Celtic; Colin Healy played on the national U18 and U21 sides and is also at Celtic. Paul Fenton, capped at U15 and U16, is with Nottingham Forrest while David O'Sullivan has featured on national u14 and U15 teams
Ballincollig's three adult male teams are not setting the Regional Park alight at present; that task is being left to a very capable Under 17 outfit who, under manager Seamus Goggin and assistant Finbarr McNulty, have reached the last sixteen of the FAI Under 17 Cup. They will have home advantage for their big date with Manortown on Saturday week.
The AUL Premier A side is battling away in mid-table. Promoted just this season, they lost some handy players, notably Seanie Murphy and Finbarr Hogan, but long serving manager Martin O'Neill has a strong panel. The main aim here is to consolidate their league position and have a good cup run. They will play either Greenmount Rangers or Coachford in the AOH, a tie that is being eagerly anticipated, perhaps not as eagerly though as their Shield meeting with local rivals Killumney on Sunday week.
Martin has great sideline help from John Flynn and Noel Hurley; Philip Brady captains the side. The full panel is: Eoin Walsh, Jason O'Leary, Noel Hogan, Brian Hartnett, Stephen Coomey, Philip Brady, Pat O'Driscoll, John Kelleher, Owen Daly, James Larkin, Conor Cronin, Graham O'Connell, David Garrett, Noel O'Mahony, Cathal O'Callaghan (Golden Boot contender), Terry Kelly, Kenneth Coomey, Alan Beale, and Martin O'Leary.
Mick McNulty looks after the very youthful first team, which plays in Division One of the MSL. Denis Campion, a former winner of the AUL Manager of the Year Award, is in charge of the AUL youths side, unlucky to lose a thrilling Murphy Youth Cup semi-final to Douglas Hall.
Mick O'Mahony, with assistance from Pat Kelly, is in charge of the second junior string who play in AUL 3. They are on course for a mid table finish and enjoyed a good run to the last eight of the President's Cup where they were beaten by eventual champions Albert Rovers.
McNamara says their long term ambition is to have their own grounds with dressing facilities: "We are now working hard towards this end and are hopeful that plans for the former Murphy Barracks will include an allocation of land so as to make this possible."
Club costs run close to £30,000 per annum so fund-raising is non-stop: "We will hold a golf classic in May for our ground development fund. Without our weekly lotto it would not be possible to run the club. That takes place every Tuesday night at Mary O'Connell's, our main sponsors. We are grateful to them and to all out sponsors."
Officers at Ballincollig are: Pat Kavanagh (chairman), B. O'Callaghan (vice chairman), Gerardene McNamara (secretary), Michael O'Mahony (assistant secretary), Christy White (treasurer), Paul Doyle (assistant treasurer), Ber Daly (PRO), Joe Hegarty (assistant PRO), Denis McCarthy (registrar), Michael McNulty (chairman, Schoolboys Section), Michael Collins (Chairman, Ladies Section).

BALLINCOLLIG APRIL 01
BALLINCOLLIG AFC
Ballincollig's A team may be taking all the headlines with their magnificent run to the sixth round of the Statoil FAI Junior but the B side, under the management team of Mick O'Mahony and Pat Kelly, are also going well.
Despite last week's late collapse against Bandon, they are well placed in Murphy's Stout AUL 3 where skipper Adrian O'Mahony and top scorer Alan Carroll are showing the way. Their main aim now is to gain promotion to the second division. But injuries are hampering them and they are lacking the experience of Micky Duggan who is wished a speedy recovery.
Their best league win was an exciting 2 - 1 derby victory over leaders Lakewood. They turned in another super show when defeating Ballinhassig 6 - 1 on their way to the quarter-finals of the President's Cup where Hillington pipped them.
The panel is: Evan Mohally, Colin Herlihy, Declan Flanagan, Adrian O'Mahony, Trevor O'Mahony, Diarmuid O'Herlihy, Alan Carroll, Terry Yelverton, Martin Fitzpatrick, Mick Duggan, Larry Duggan, Mark McCormack, Shane Cadogan, Vincent Twomey, Neil Donovan, and Jason Doyle.
Martin O'Neill, the manager of the A team, was recently named Ballincollig Sportsperson of the Year for his commitment and dedication over twenty years. Denis Campion and Finbarr Fitton manage the AUL Youths team while the U17s are in the capable hands of Michael Collins.
Club secretary Gerardine McNamara tells us that the annual Golf Classic will take place on May 11th in Macroom. McNamara's fellow officers are Pat Kavanagh (chairperson), Danny Garrett (Vice Chairperson), Christy White (treasurer), Mick O'Mahony (assistant secretary), Paul Doyle and Richie Goggin (assistant treasurers), Joe Hegarty (PRO).
Other committee members are: Michael McNulty, Denis Campion, Michael Collins, John O'Sullivan, Pat Morrissey, Martin O'Neill, and Ber Daly. John Hogan is president and the vice presidents are John Coughlan, Michael Healy, Vincent Drumm, and Patrick Byrne.
