DOUGLAS HALL EVERTON 2000

MURPHY YOUTH CUP FINAL - DOUGLAS HALL v EVERTON - TURNER'S CROSS - SUNDAY - 11.00am.

Everton will be contesting their sixth Murphy Youth Cup final in seven years when they take on Douglas Hall at the Cross on Sunday morning (kick off 10.45). Both sides have distinguished themselves this season: Everton had a good run in the FAI Cup while Douglas, also through to the last four of the League Cup, are unbeaten since last October.

Holders Everton beat Mayfield in the 1994 decider and lost to Ballincollig in the following season. In 97 they lost to Leeds, in 98 to Ballincollig, before beating Temple last term. Douglas may not be able to match Everton's record in the Murphy but they did win the Second Division Youths Cup last season.

Douglas secretary Con Harrington is delighted with the fifteen game unbeaten run: "The bulk of this team have won trophies from Under 8 up. Billy O'Neill, Gerard O'Donovan, and Derek Bowen, have represented the AUL this season and six of the panel have senior experience".

Everton, managed by Paul Desmond, Paul Scannell, and Noel O'Sullivan, have also won their share of representative honours. Terry White is perhaps the best known, having played this season for the Irish Senior Schools team and the MFA Under 17 side. Desmond is new to the management team this season and is a major contributor, especially with training.

Douglas Hall squad: Colm McCarthy, David Cotter, Billy O'Neill, Joe McSorley (captain), Barry O'Shea, Rodger Barrett, Eoin O'Brien, Brian Wilkinson, Damien O'Callaghan, James O'Leary, Paul Rose, Cathal Hipwell, Derek Bowen, and Gerard O'Donovan.

Everton panel: Stephen O'Sullivan, Paddy Fielding, Lawrence Fitzpatrick, Philip Hayes, Gavin O'Leary (captain), John Desmond, Martin Horgan, Terry White, Richard Barry, Stephen Duncliffe, Michael Ahern, Paul McGrath, Roger Moore, Stephen Houlihan, Gary Murphy, Alan Harte, and Stephen Crowley.

Damien O'Mahony is the referee for Sunday's decider and his assistants are John Thompson and Barry Kelleher.

RECENT WINNERS: St Mary's (1983); Crofton Celtic (84); Casement Celtic (85 & 86); Rockmount (87); Casement Celtic (88); Rockmount (89); Casement Celtic (90); Wilton Utd (91); Rockmount (92 & 93); Everton (94); Ballincollig (95); Midleton (96); Leeds (97); Blarney Utd (98); and Everton (99).

PATHS TO THE FINAL

Each of Sunday's contestants received a bye in the opening round and Douglas had a bloodless victory over Richmond in round two. Everton also had it easy when goals from Stephen Houlihan (2), Gavin O'Leary (2), Laurence Fitzpatrick, and Paul McGrath, gave them a 6 - 0 win over Hibernians.

In December, the Hall came up against cup favorites Temple Utd and Gerard O'Donovan netted a hat trick in a stirring 3 - 1 win. Douglas recently repeated the dose in the league cup to prove that they are a quality outfit.

Everton had it surprisingly tough against lower ranked Dripsey Celtic in the 3rd round though it must be said that Stephen Forde's Mid Cork side have improved throughout the season.

The first game ended at 3 - 3, Stephen Duncliffe, Richard Barry, and John Desmond, on the mark for Everton. The city team fell behind in the replay; White equalised and Richard Barry snatched the winner after his own header came back off the bar.

Douglas Hall were up against Ballincollig in their January semi-final and O'Donovan got the only goal of the game to put them through. O'Donovan also scored with a diving header against Temple in the League Cup so he seems to be the man for the big occasion and is he only Hall player to have scored in the Murphy this season.

Everton had a comfortable enough 4 - 1 win over Leeside in their semi-final. White notched a double while Houlihan and Michael Ahern also scored.

DOUGLAS HALL MIDLETON SPRINGFIELD 1999

CLUBS ON THE NET

Time was when hitting the net had only one meaning in football - that time has passed. Ask Douglas hall, Midleton, and Springfield, three AUL clubs who can be found on the net, the internet that is.

The 'Hall site has been up and running for about 2 years. When Joe Doherty started the site, it was pretty much experimental: "I wasn't sure what, if any, interest there would be. I had been working on my own site and added a few pages for the club".

Over time, the site has evolved and now includes results and fixtures, generally updated on a weekly basis. "This is one of the difficulties", says Joe. "It is always necessary to keep the site updated - there is no point in having and using the internet service without maintaining accurate information".

Another "side effect" has been correspondence from clubs and individuals around the world. So far, Doherty has recorded letters from Italy, Portugal, England, Scotland, Wales, USA, Canada and Mozambique. "Former Douglas Hall players in Belgium and Austria have been in touch, as have Douglas natives in Australia and New Zealand. I like to think that these Douglas people see the site as a link to home - hence the need to maintain accurate information".

Further, with access to the internet now spreading, there is no doubt that Douglas players do access the site and check that their own latest result is included.

Joe says that feedback has been very positive and while maintenance can be time consuming (not always), the effort involved is overall worthwhile. In addition, team managers are now well aware of the need to provide information about their teams - scorers, results, performances and so on - similar to the need to provide information for inclusion in the newspapers.

The Springfield web page is running since last Christmas and is constantly being revamped. It now gives a brief history of the club and has a separate page on each of the teams from Under 11s up to the Premier side. These pages include match fixtures, results, scorers, league tables and some photographs, all of which are updated as soon as the results are at hand.

While the web page could be classified as an 'unofficial' site it has the full backing of the club. Ted Creedon started the page as a hobby both for himself and his son who plays with the U-16 & U-17 sides, but the 'hobby' is now starting to be a regular informative sheet, especially for ex players now abroad.

The Midleton website had a more planned start than the others as it is part of a change in structures and ongoing developments that are currently taking place within the club who see it as a gradual process.

Midleton FC chairman Michael Kirby and his fellow officers decided to enlist the services of Pat Carroll, who had spent a number of years with Churchvilla FC in the role of club development, to re-package Midleton Football Club.

The site has provided the club with a new means of communication and at the same time allowing the public access to what is occurring within the club.

Through the website the club has built up relationships with a lot of clubs all over the country and worldwide some of whom are undergoing similar development plans as the Magpies. Knockgriffin Park is renowned for its facilities and it is the clubs aim to constantly improve them for players and members. It is widely anticipated that within a very short period of time website and email communication will be the norm within a lot of clubs and organisations, it is Midleton Football Club's intention to utilise it to its full extent.

It was decided to look at the entire workings of the club over a three month period .Significant areas included- all playing sections, administration, cost saving measures, club image and presentation , fund raising and club sponsorship

On the playing side Midleton FC is currently going through what can best be described as a "period of transition “with a high percentage of very young players.

The advent of the website along with the development of the all weather playing surface has allowed Midleton FC enhance other areas within the club. All club business is now computerised, a players database has been constructed which contains all relevant information from registration, membership, home address, phone no.etc. It has provided the club with a new means of communication and at the same time allowing the public access to what is occurring within the club.

It was Midleton Football Club's aim to procure a high profile sponsor and the Magpie website went a long way in achieving this when the large multinational Stryker Instruments after a very courteous meeting with Stryker Instruments Mr. Mike McGrath and Midleton FC's officers, Stryker Instruments expressed a desire to become associated with the club. This was seen as an endorsement of the new foundations being put in place by Midleton FC.

Billy,

DOUGLAS HALL 1993

DOUGLAS COLTS:

Victory in the final of the Coca Cola Youths League Cup was the highlight of the season for the minors of Douglas Hall, a season in which they emerged as one of the two leading youths sides in Cork. They gave Rockmount a great fight in Division One, a fight that went down to the last match which the northsiders won 3 - 2 to take the championship.

It was the fifth meeting between the sides. They started with a scoreless league tie. Then The Hall scored a shock 3 - 1 win in the Evening Echo Munster Youths Cup (only to be surprised themselves by Killarney Athletic).

Rockmount levelled the series with a 1 - 0 Murphy Cup win but Douglas had the edge in the League Cup semi-final which they won on spotters.

The talented Douglas lads were managed by Kieran Grainger. It was his first season with the club but Grainger has had considerable management experience with UCC. He led the students to success in the AUL Second Division in 1987 and then there were the successful Collingwood cup campaigns of 90 and 91.

Grainger picked from the following: David Boyle, John Carroll, Ian Murnaghan, John Mehigan, Stephen O'Connell, John Kenneally, John Glackin (vice-captain), Kieran Desmond, Alan Carroll, David Grainger (captain), Ian Doyle, Donough Keeshan, Mark O'Connell, Ronan Corkery, and Peter Lyons.

Most of the squad had been together for a number of years though without

success. But a couple of new signings and Grainger's influence changed all that. The scoring talents of Doyle, hat trick hero in the Coca Cola final triumph, and skipper Grainger, were other major factors.

DOUGLAS HALL 1993

Douglas Hall are off to Kerry on Saturday next where they take on Killarney

Celtic in the quarter-final of the Munster Youths Cup. The Hall, under

manager Kieran Grainger, have emerged as one of the top minor teams in Cork

and, in the previous round of the provincial championship, surprised mighty

Rockmount.

Douglas, with Ian Doyle and skipper David Grainger collecting the goals, are

currently second in the Barry's Tea AUL First Division and are also through to

the semi-final of the League Cup following Saturday's win over Everton. They

have suffered just one defeat in 14 games and that was to southside rivals

Ringmahon Rangers in the FAI Cup.

Grainger picks form the following: D. Boyle, J. Carroll, I. Murnaghan, J.

Mehigan, S. O'Connell, J. Kenneally, J. Glackin (vice-captain), K. Demsond, A.

Carroll, D. Grainger (captain), I. Doyle, M. O'Connell, R. Corkery, and P.

Lyons.

DOUGLAS HALL 1994

"We'd prefer a level playing pitch to a tidy car park". That was the message

that came across loud and clear at the Douglas Hall annual general meeting.

According to the latest edition of The Hall Post, the club newsletter, the

message is being acted on. Plans to develop the car park and finish off the

entrance to the club's grounds at Moneygourney have been put on hold and the

main focus of attention is now to "get one of the pitches sorted out".

Not an easy job. It will involve installing additional drainage, levelling

the surface, and closing the pitch for the season. The other pitches would

then have to cater for extra games. Additional funding will be needed and

secretary Joe Doherty emphasises the importance of the club's own lottery.

Editor Joe Doherty also highlights a "crisis" at the Hall and one which is

becoming increasingly familiar at Cork soccer clubs and that is the lack of

personnel to look after the ever increasing numbers of schoolchildren wanting

to play in organised football: "Manpower is our biggest problem... existing

team managers are stretched to the limit .... parents' help needed".

Doherty played with last season's Douglas team in the MSL junior section and

won the Player of the Year award. Other winners included: Tom Murphy (Senior

team), Aidan O'Regan (AUL junior), Donie O'Regan (Over 35), Ray O'Connell

(Under 17), Kenneth Wade (Under 14), David Cahill (Under 13), Derick Bowen

(Under 12), Roger Barrett (Under 11), and Liam O'Sullivan (Clubman of the

Year).

Douglas Hall officers for 1994/95 are C. J. Harrington (Chairman), Andrew

Fealy (Vice Chairman), Joe Doherty (Secretary), Gerry O'Connell (Treasurer),

Anthony O'Sullivan (Assistant Treasurer). Other committee members are Brian

Kennedy, Bert O'Mahony, Liam O'Sullivan, and Brian Sheehy.
